Tips of the Month

1.

Synchronize Your Files with any Computer Using Dropbox
Dropbox is an internet-based application that allows you to put files into a "virtual" folder on your computer called a "dropbox" which stores your files on line and synchs with any computer on which you have the Dropbox program installed. You can get 2GB of free online storage, with a 50GB premium account available for $9.99 per month. You can even revert to earlier versions of your documents after saving and editing them if you wish. For more information visit www.getdropbox.com.

2.

Wait! Stop! Stop!
Have you ever clicked the wrong link while you were browsing? Don't you just hate that? You frantically try to get your mouse up to the Stop button before you end up at the wrong page, but you don't always make it. So, here are a few suggestions:

If you've clicked the wrong link and still have that left mouse button pressed down, just drag your pointer off the link to a blank spot and release. No harm done.

But what if you've already clicked the link and you're off to the wrong page? Is there any hope?

Yup, just hit the Escape key. That will stop your browser in it's tracks - it's also a good way to stop an onslaught of pop up windows, should you accidentally wander onto one of those kind of sites.

3.

CTRL Your Folders and More
Do you ever find yourself scrolling through a huge folder? If you need to get to the beginning or the end quickly, just press CTRL - HOME. If you want to get to the end, click CTRL - END.

This little trick works on more than just folders. If you use the HOME key in a word processor, it should go to the beginning of the line on which you're currently working. If you hit the END key, it should head to the end of the current line. Use HOME & END with the CTRL key in a word processor to go to the beginning or end of a document. This works with Word & should also work on most other word processors.

Oh, try hitting the HOME or END key with your web browser too.

Microsoft Sheds Light on Windows 7 Features
With Windows 7 being allegedly launched in 12 months or so, Microsoft have done a sneak peak on some of the features. One of the main focuses seems to be fixing Vista's (many!) weak points. The new operating system is designed to boot and perform much faster than Vista, with less hardware resources. Microsoft showed off Windows 7 running at full speed on a PC with only a 1 GHz processor and 1 GB of RAM. That is definitely good news! The user interface is similar to Vista, but with enough changes to give it a new feel. Multi-touch features (similar to iPhone perhaps) and "mouse gestures" will be new options for navigation. There will be fewer popups & notifications, simpler WiFi (about time!), a smoother networking experience, improved search, & tighter device integration. For a more detailed look at Windows 7, you can read ZDNet's article by clicking here.
