Google's New Web Browser, "Chrome"
Google Chrome

Google has just launched their new web browser called "Chrome." Usually I'm pretty wary of trying new web browsers, but this one is actually quite impressive. Pages load very quickly, The entire interface is very slick yet simplified and uses very little system resources. A very interesting feature is the "incognito" mode: when in this mode, no website history, cookies, etc is saved to your system. Chrome, by default will use the Google search engine, but you can specify any search engine you like to be your default. To search, you just type in your search parameters directly into the address bar and hit enter. To download Google Chrome (free), click here.

Amazon Launches Video On-Demand Site

.

Amazon has just unveiled their own video on-demand service. You can rent movies or tv shows from their website and watch it on your computer, or, in some cases, on your television (depending if you have a supported device.) Their collection includes over 40,000 movies and television shows. All movies & TV shows are advertisement free and seem to run about $3 - $4 for movies & about $2 for TV shows. You have the option for seven day rental or you can purchase a movie. You have the option to stream the movie or download to watch later. To see what all the service has to offer click here.

Protect Your Computer from Malicious Websites
You can't always control what websites people visit when using your computer; but you can control how well your computer is protected. There is a program called Sandboxie that does an excellent job protecting your computer from malicious websites. It runs your web browser in a temporary area on your computer that can't alter your data etc. To learn more about how Sandboxie works and how to use it, click here.

Fake Antivirus Threats (eg. AntiVirus 2008" etc)
People still seem to be getting infected with spyware/viruses that pretend to be antivirus programs . Very intimidating alerts can pop up on your screen, often while searching seemingly legitimate sites, warning you that your system appears to be infected and to click to start a scan or download software. It is important to be able to recognize these fake alerts and close the pop up immediately - without clicking on anything on the page. Once you agree to install or run the scan, your computer becomes infected and usually opens up a gateway for further infections to be streamlined into your PC. To become more knowledgable about this issue please read our threat bulletin on this issue.
